Ward, Duke, Gneezy & Bos (2017) tested ~800 people. A phone on the desk lowered available working memory, even silenced, even face down. Another room was best. So Kiri has no phone app. It can't follow you there.

One large study; a 2022 replication found a smaller effect and a 2023 meta-analysis of 22 studies found a small but real one. We say so in the full write-up.

Is there a focus timer that isn't on my phone?
Kiri is one. It runs only in a desktop browser, as a Microsoft Store app on Windows and as a new-tab extension for Chrome and Firefox. There is no phone app, on purpose: the phone is the thing you are trying to put away.
Why no phone app?
Because the phone is the thing you're trying to get away from. Ward et al. (2017) found that a phone within reach lowers working memory even when it's off and face down; later studies found a smaller effect, not a zero one. An app on it would undo the point. Kiri runs in your laptop browser only.
Is Kiri free?
The free tier stays free: the timer with 25, 50 or 90-minute blocks, rain, brown noise, alpha binaural beats, streaks and your session log. The other sounds and beats are a one-time purchase.
Why pay once instead of a subscription?
A timer and some sound files don't cost us money every month, so they shouldn't cost you money every month. Everything is €39 once, future features included, no subscription. If the price goes up later, you've already paid.
What sounds does Kiri have?
Ten soundscapes: rain, brown noise, pink noise, white noise, forest, café, fireplace, sea, wind and waterfall. The nature and café sounds are built from real field recordings, and every sound runs for hours, so you don't hear a loop. Binaural beats can play underneath if you want them.
Does Kiri work on Windows and Mac?
Yes. It runs in any modern desktop browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on Windows, Mac or Linux. On Windows you can also install it from the Microsoft Store, and Chrome and Firefox have a new-tab extension.
Do I need an account?
No. The homepage runs a full session with no login. If you sign up later, the blocks you did as a guest are imported into your log, and you get 14 days of full access to try every sound.
What if I don't like it?
Email within 30 days and you get a refund. No form, no reason required.
